Careers: Acupuncturist

by: P.R. Seitz

Acupuncture is the traditional Chinese medicinal technique of using needles placed at specific points on the body where the qi or vital energy flows. Acupuncture originated in Eurasia several thousand years ago. The practice was introduced in the United States during the 1970’s and has gained popularity as an alternative medicine to relieve pain, discomfort or other minor ailments and is often associated with other more complex surgical procedures. There has been no clear scientific support of the effects of acupuncture; however, the holistic approach has found its way into traditional American medical procedures and post-treatment support.

There are 50 schools in the United States that offer accredited educational programs in traditional Chinese medicine. Program lengths vary but typically run three to four years. Many of these programs offer post-graduate Master’s programs as well. Following the completion of a degree program, obtaining board certification by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) is recommended. This certification is recognized by states that maintain legal practice guidelines for acupuncture. California has its own certification board and requirements.

Acupuncturists generally own and operate their own clinics. Occasionally acupuncture is also added to existing medical or chiropractic clinics as an adjunct practice.
