Careers: Reflexologist

Job Description:

Reflexology is an occupation which involves the practice of squeezing, pushing or massaging regions of the feet, hands or ears to promote beneficial result on other parts of the body, to enhance general health or achieve specialized objectives.

Occupation History:

Eunice Ingham, a nurse and physiotherapist advanced the application of the precursory alternative medical practice of “zone therapy” in the 1930s and 1940s by mapping the entire body into "reflexes" on the feet.

Education and Training:

The national standards for skill and competency are demonstrated by passing a written, practical and documentation American Reflexology Certification Board examination. Currently only North Dakota and Tennessee have reflexology laws. Many other states have statewide massage laws, some of which have an exemption for reflexologists.

Reflexology courses are offered at a multitude of schools and private career training institutions, with program requirements varying from six months of home study to a more comprehensive curriculum involving over 100 hours of instructor led training. While, The American Reflexology Certification Board does not endorse or certify any specific reflexology schools, curricula or instructors; it does recognize competent and ethical professional reflexologists.
